So i've been training with my current instructor for around a year, before that i trained at a gym 2 cities over where i took group classes,i left after a few months due to anxiety and being burned out from worrying about class.
My current instructor is against competition and isn't willing to help me progress in that direction, which i can understand as it is a self defense Jiu Jitsu school (VB affiliate) I have only had 2 private classes per week due to my inability to take group classes

i've been looking into a school around 2 miles from my home,up to 30 classes per week (all group classes) i have previously trained with a couple of their students and they're super nice guys.
It's just the group environment terrifies me
The odd number of people meaning one guy is left out,the awkward guy sat in the corner.
Maybe i overthink the whole thing too much but i feel training with different people and becoming more social will really benefit me with my personal life as well as my Jiu Jitsu.

If anyone has any tips as to how i can deal with this or combat the strange anxiety i have please do let me know!
Thanks
Jordan

i'd encourage you to seek therapy for your anxiety. you need to find a way to get out of your head. anxiety is a monster that will consume you and your livelihood if left to its own devices. anxiety is mismanaged stress. stress in and of itself is fine, and anxiety is warranted in certain situations, but chronic anxiety is debilitating and leads to myriad negative health outcomes. learning to manage and cope with your anxiety will be one of the most important and best things you ever do for yourself.

when you're in a better place, jujitsu will still be here.

Would you suggest to stop training altogether until i get things straight or continue having privates until i'm ready to do group classes.
I recently competed in my first mma fight a couple of months ago and won,but i feel that things have got worse since then, maybe it's just burned me out i'm not sure.
But i am pursuing therapy,i have my first session in 3 days.

probably?

note that i'm not saying that to mean like 'stop working' or 'stop exercising' or anything like that, but if there are specific things in your life that you can identify as triggers for anxiety/panic attacks, it's best to at least stay away.

while this might seem preachy or a bit cliche, try to focus on enabling your success in this endeavor: eat better, sleep better, get decent exercise, and avoid vices.

while it's important to determine the catalysts for your anxieties, oftentimes it's not the causes of anxiety that give people the most trouble in the long-term, but rather the inappropriate ways in which they try to cope: substance abuse, social avoidance, gambling, promiscuity, binge eating, self-harm, etc.

the ruts people fall into are often ruts they've dug themselves, and while some folks recognize this and claw back out, others keep digging.

nothing is insurmountable, but this shit takes time, and while you won't make progress as quickly as you hope, being cognizant of the stuff i mentioned above and doing your best to heed the positives and avoid the negatives will shrink that timeline considerably.

Hold on here.

You did some Bjj group class in the past but got anxiety and burn out.

Now you moved to a format of private class with a bb that specialise in self defense.

But you also won his first mma fight 2 months ago.

Is there something I am missing?

just go to the group class, and show up anyway...nobody cares

i dont say that with the tone it comes across, i mean it more literally-nobody will think about it, ifs theres an odd number in drilling work in with 3, if theres an odd number in rolling, sit out when its your turn and roll when its your turn

its as simple as that, dont put anymore thought into it

Haha. Lol. I was thinking the same thing. Make no sense. Troll thread.

They have new medications for anxiety, work much better than the old medicines. If you have insurance, see a doctor, get professional advice about whether you want medicine, dietary restriction, individual therapy, group therapy. Same advice for panic disorder, depression, migraines, and chronic pain.

i'm gonna throw up a flag on 'medicine' - SSRI's and Benzos are more or less palliative and are very detrimental to training.

pills shouldn't be a long-term therapeutic solution. the new thinking is they're adjunctive at best, and that long-term use can exacerbate certain conditions.

CBT and talk therapy work, both separately and especially when combined.

As far as anxiety goes, go see a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, etc. For one you can't diagnose yourself and two only they can guide in the right direction if you stick with it if you're serious and/or it's affecting your life. I have been diagnosed with anxiety and receive treatment (therapy and medication) so I know what I'm talking about.

As far as doing BJJ, just do it. You can either stay home marinating in your anxieties, or you can have it in a gym and deal with it while making friends and having a support network.
