What I never understood is how you get to blackbelt in BJJ and never compete. Always thought bjj was this martial arts were you will earn your higher belts also by competing because thats how bjj was built. Thats what was told to me by local BJJ school. They would only promote their pupils after certain point if they compete and earn it.

We had threads like this before and I was told by bjj practitioners that it can be completely legit to not compete at all but be a high caliber black belt.

Going with this Rogan sure can be a legit black belt just no way to tell.

Its a little strange for a guy that focused on his "fighter" ego and always posting about himself that he does not compete (senior master division) or just posts clips of himself rolling with black belts.

I wonder why Rogan has never competed, id love to see him in Metamoris... or maybe do an amateur EBI, that sort of thing... this is not me hating like it might seem, i like Rogan and would be legitimately interested in watching him compete.

Rogan has been rolling for what, almost 25+ years with Machado, and Eddie and people are questioning if he's a legit black belt?

He was pretty old when he started getting good at jiu jitsu Is the Issue. Even marcelo garcia retired from competition when he was like 30. just like fighting, jiu jitsu is a young mans game.

I will say one thing though.

I trained under an 8th degree carlson gracie black belt. Whenever he was demonstrating things, he went hard as fuck.

All Instructors are different. It's not necessarily good or bad. It's a demonstration of the art.

Going hard Is not necessarily bad. Either In demonstration or rolling. There Is truth In all things.

I also, anecdotically, heard that he's often depicted with his lifeguard that had a requirment to be well above average height, making the average height Napoleon look short in comparison

There is no such thing as rolling too hard. As long as someone does not snap an arm or thinks falling into a heel hook with his full body weight is fun, instead controls the submission it is all good.

As a kick boxer I loved doing grappling because it is way less stressful than striking. Rolling feels like going on a holiday compared to sparring professional fighters in striking only.

As long as you do not get hurt, there is no rolling too hard.
