Wikipedia says that Anderson Silva is a judo black belt, but is there any evidence to back this up? I never heard about that until now. Not that it's a big deal or anything, but I would like to know.

It was a gift one if he has one at all. He displays no ability to throw or trip and had weak TDD defense most of his career. That is a poor excuse for a judo BB

If he does, it's like a doctorate "honoris causa". Someone gave it to him just bc he's Anderson Silva.

I doubt it's legit. At least in my country judo is one of the tougher martial arts to earn a black belt in.

Kinda stupid how belts can just be given as a present...

One can have a black belt and another fighter can have a black belt and they are on a completely different level. Watch Yoshida verses Don Frye to see what happens.

It's not that uncommon for bjj black belts to have Judo black belts whether or not they are great at judo. Most bjj instructors incorporate judo and for some reason guys will be given a judo bb with their bjj one.

I don't see it as much anymore but maybe it's more common in Brazil.

Hespect.

Took me like 8 years to get brown belt, i would assume Anderson wouldn't had to many problems getting a legit BB in judo.

He earned his black belt under Professor Ronda Rousey.

Yoshida is a 7th degree and been doing since he could walk. Don got away from it and still looked good in the early UFC era with it.

it took me 4 to get to Green belt and I think Siver did it even longer and is green. They don't just hand out belts usually.

You can't judge a person's proficiency in an art by what they do in a cage against the best fighters in the world.
Especially when it's not the person's primary art.

How many times have I heard some Brazilian BJJ black belt fighter say how they believe in their zhoozheetsoo, but then they do absolutely nothing with their awesome zhoozheetsoo after being taken down.
Or a guy like Akiyama came to MMA with world class judo...did someone tell him he's not allowed to use his judo in fights?

Aikiyama displays great Judo in mma. What bothers me is I've never seen it in Andersons fights. Maybe it was an art he did as a kid and got away from over the years.

Id guess its relatively legit. Meaning he has earned the level. Even if he didn't spend years training judo under someone, hes highly trained in Bjj and Muay Thai. The grappling, clinch work, sweeps, takedowns, and throws he possesses from being proficient in those 2 arts would allow him to display high level judo skill with very little actual training in judo.

In other words:
years and years of Bjj+years and years of Muay thai=black belt level judo skills in a fraction of the time it would normally take

Kinda like how Satoshi Ishii was given a BJJ brown belt the first time he stepped into a BJJ school.

That would be very weird because any adult judoka is expected to be a black belt, or at the very least brown. They don't do adult competitions for lower belt like in BJJ for a reason. Maybe my vision is skewed because I'm French and judo is very popular here (people start quite young so maybe they get their black belt earlier as a result), but to me it's like karaté or tae kwon do where the vast majority of training adults are black belts.

I got to green after two years but I did have years of collegiate and freestyle wrestling experience beforehand
