Another nation building mission that American taxpayers didn't ask for?

AIN ISSA, Syria (Reuters) - Washington's main Syrian ally in the fight against Islamic State says the U.S. military will remain in northern Syria long after the jihadists are defeated, predicting enduring ties with the Kurdish-dominated region.

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of militias dominated by the Kurdish YPG, believes the United States has a "strategic interest" in staying on, SDF spokesman Talal Silo told Reuters.

"They have a strategy policy for decades to come. There will be military, economic and political agreements in the long term between the leadership of the northern areas (of Syria) ... and the U.S. administration," Silo said.

The U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State has deployed forces at several locations in northern Syria, including an airbase near the town of Kobani. It has supported the SDF with air strikes, artillery, and special forces on the ground.

Remember when the Trump supporters said he would be different, and the rest of us pointed out he wouldn't? That once he was briefed by the top experts all putting their heads together in the same room that he would do what all other Republicans and Democrats have done, and basically start reacting to that information, rather than to partisan theory or philosophy?

While I fully agree with the libertarian call to more isolation, there is a reason that pure, absolute isolationism doesn't work (see Pearl Harbor). Why? Because pretending the rest of the world's problems are best laid beyond your doorstep doesn't mean they won't show up to it: ringing your doorbell. That's why I do sometimes support policies and aggressive neoconservative tactics such as the brilliant strike against the Al-Shayrat airbase.

But these occupations are a major drain. I would much prefer to let the Europeans handle it. This is their doorstep, after all.

What's gonna happen with Syrian gov and Russia? Do they accept this?

"He suggested northern Syria could become a new base for U.S. forces in the region. "Maybe there could be an alternative to their base in Turkey," he added, referring to the Incirlik air base."

"We're constantly asking them for clear, public political support," Silo said. He said the U.S. State Department held its first public meeting with SDF officials this month.

"At the moment there are no meetings being held for a real discussion of Syria's future. There are initiatives for developing political support for our forces, but we hope this will be bigger," he said."

Sounds like the are no plans currently in place for US forces to stay in Syria after the defeat of ISIS. This reads more like the Kurds begging the US to stay so that they don't get completely devastated by a combined Assad/Turkey/Iranian force once the US exits the theater of conflict.

Iran's military chief visited Ankara a few days ago:

Russia's defense chief is on his way to Ankara as well:

Turkey-Iran-Russia are planning "to set up "de-escalation zones" in Syria to try to stem the fighting in some parts of the country, including the northern province of Idlib, which borders Turkey and has since been overrun by jihadists linked to a former al Qaeda affiliate." Additionally, the Iranians and Turks "would discuss the conflict in Iraq as well as dealing with Kurdish militants in the Turkish-Iranian border region, where Turkish media say Turkey has started building a frontier wall."

Essentially, Turkey has accepted that their dreams of overthrowing Assad and establishing a client state in Syria have been quashed. Assad is not going anywhere in the near future. The Kurds (really the YPG) know that they are next in the crosshairs and they are scrambling and desperate to get the US to stay to prevent their annihilation.

But, there are no plans (as of yet) for the US to stay in Syria. So far. Who knows, Trump may change his mind and commit the US to another prolonged occupation in the sandbox.

Stop ruining the trump hate circle jerk

they were already spiking the football

Reminds me of Caesar using a call to help from the Gauls regarding the Germans as an excuse to conquer all of Gaul and to stay permanently. But Americans don't wait for the call of help. We spread democracy like a herpes virus. Once you catch freedom it doesnt go away.
