I think you're looking at the difference between words and actions.
Robspierre certainly preached an egalitarian overthrow of the existing hierarchy, which is what makes him left wing.
People do make the argument that their establishment and defence of hierarchy makes them right-wing, but that's the same argument used to characterise big "C" communism as right-wing, which I think is inherently dishonest. The same sort of abuse of language that libertarians are playing with their authoritarian definition of left and right.
