Will computers or computer programs render a majority of the accounting jobs obsolete? I'm returning back to college and trying to decide between computer science and accounting. I know barely little about computers. As for accounting, I have little to no problem doing mathematics. My goal is to work in the public sector.

One of my concerns is that accounting can possibly be phased out by computers. In addition, I read there will be an automation boom in 15-20 years. So entering the computer field would be beneficial.

Accountant checking in. If I had to do it all over again I'd do engineering or computer science. Every single job I've had since I got my degree has been mind numbingly boring and tedious. Plus if you work in Public Accounting you are your company's sweat shop bitch during spring every year.

Yup, computers will be phasing you out in about 15 yrs

Eventually but it will probably be a little while.

Accounting services are starting to get outsourced to India.

If you're at a senior level or above it's fine but in the next 10 years entry level jobs might be harder to come by.

That being said there is a lot of money to be made if your are both computer and accounting literate.

Somebody has to be able to show the software engineers accounting logic and vice versa.

Might as well do a minor in the one your don't pick.

That's what I was somewhat thinking. The aim was to get my a.a. in comp science. Followed by getting a city/govt/state job THEN completing the bachelor's degree.

@Revolver is an an accountant. And not poor
Yes and to answer the TS no. Computers may eliminate the lower level accounting jobs but you still need people to analyze and interpret the data. Higher level accountants and specialists will always be needed.

Are you a CPA?

Accountant's wives are ranked number one most likely to fuck another guy. Do yourself a favor and pick something else
