Asia routinely trounces the West when it comes to Science and Math. This is arguably not a subjective statement.

Is part of the West's education problem politically charged Meddling?

Here's two stories about Education:

Chinese Students taking entrance exams for college. My wife's Chinese, these tests determine your future in China, from opportunity to condemnation into manual labor the rest of your life. Stakes are high.

Here's an all too typical op-ed piece about education in the west. "it's too white"!!!

Here's my beef with this kinda shit; Politicizing education. It's a lucrative way to advance yourself in Academia these days. At what expense though?

Gutierrez — whose “focuses on equity issues in mathematics education,” especially “how race, class, and language affect teaching and learning,” her school bio indicates — also wrote, “Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as White.”

As global as everything is now, who's a Company going to hire?

The entitled idiot?

Pretty much the way it is.

Soft skills cannot be overstated in the workplace. Most talented people educated in Asia don't have them.

Look at the number of STEM startups that are based in China or India. Then look at the ones based in the US. Math and science are necessary but not sufficient to succeed in business.

The Father of American education(John Dewey) was a socialist. Dewey's secret scams are the reason why we have 50 million functional illiterates, why high school graduates can't multiply seven times eight, why most American kids can't find Japan on a map. The progressives who control education deified John Dewey and place him on a pedestal, but that was a marketing tool. The major problem in all of American education is dishonesty. Schools could be much better at less cost. But few will tell the truth about any aspect of public education, ever since John Dewey launched his disingenuous crusade to transform America via the classroom.

I don't know how the west, (America) can turn the tables and compete with what they're doing in China, (for instance). Culturally they value education, yet here it's as much a product to be profited from, (in many ways) than any other.

Educator's do it.
Media does it.
Companies do it.

Our culture is behind the curve.

And now everyone's entitled to it, (something else to argue about and profit from)

Bloody hell.

You also have to take into account that most talented people from asia came to the USA in the past. However, as those economies emerge many talented people in those nations will stay back home. It is easy to underestimate the up and comers on the world stage but things will eventually change. A lot of people here underestimate the chinese military modernization but there was a recent report of a chinese sub surprising a fleet of US navy ships conducting drills in the south china sea. The USA ships didnt notice the sub until it emerged in open water in the middle of the drill. Things are changing and eventually there will be a level playing field which the world is heading towards anyways. USA is at the top of the hill but like any power before it the people have been fully fed thus have become complacent. Other nations are hungry for their opportunity.

There is a phenomena called "Brain drain" that has no counter part in the US. The highest educated and motivated people from Asia leave to the west to pursue their ambitions. 88% of Chinese and 82% of Indians who got their Ph.D's in the US never returned to their countries. Until this changes I don't see the hungry nations making up ground.

my point is that is slowly changing....i bet in the past a 100 percent stayed in USA and civilizations arent formed in years as it can take centuries.

Agreed.

Not sure, what's your criteria?
Looking at the most important mathematical discoveries, I marked non-Asians green, Asians yellow and people of Asian ancestry who didn't go through an Asian but Western education system white.
Even some of the yellow fellas either visited Western universities or did their work there.
Yellows also include India. Now think about how many people live in the Asian world including India?

Yes, pretty much a lot of the more advanced countries obliterate American education up to completion of high school. When you get to the college/university level (Bachelors, Masters and PhDs), the United States still leads the rest of the world. A lot of it due to foreigners who come to study in the U.S.

Hey Hey, I'm talkin Murican students here.

Well, shit like this is part of the problem:

Drop algebra requirement for non-STEM majors, California community colleges chief says

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-california-community-colleges-algebra-20170717-story.html

Proposals include eliminating math and English placement tests for 12th-graders who meet eligibility requirements for admission to the Cal State and UC systems (completing a list of prescribed courses with acceptable grades, for instance). Placement tests are coming under fire for inaccurately gauging college readiness, sending too many students into remediation who could succeed in college-level courses with adequate support.

Instead of insisting on people stepping up their fuckin games, we have people insisting on lowering the bar to accommodate ineptitude. Lot of good that approach is going to do for the future.

Ok, now I'm confused. I thought you compared Asian education systems, for instance their college admission tests (merit-based and selective) to what you identified as problems of the American education system (politicization, everybody-is-a-winner etc).

I'm gonna have to stop you right there.

That's not to say that STEM education in the US doesn't have a lot of room for improvement, but China is far from being a model that we should look to.

Math and Science is racist. You can't expect non-asians to stay in school and actually study. Westerners just don't have that gene and not in the culture. You'd get made fun of. Also, who cares about whether or not we can do math when we have calculators and hire Asians?

Well said. And I did not know that.
