Back in the days on the mat, every time American guy grabbed my leg and went for submission, I would think to myself "Oh yeah, he's gonna play my game, let's see how deep he could go down with me" I didn't even try to defend and waited for a counter opportunity to knock. And most of the times I heard his tapping noise. He didn't mine.
I learned my first leglock ever, Achilles tendon hold in 1984 while watching the original UWF tour on VHS with my brother. That's the move I used to earn my first victory in BJJ match in 2000. And to this date, nobody who has tried it on me (that includes black belts, ADCC winner, top UFC welterweight fighter) got a tapout.
This is how confident fighters who trained in Japan should be when it comes to leglock.
Leglocks are Japanese invention (like most of submissions) and whatever Russians say, Japanese should be ruling in this department. I broke my heart when I heard Arona kneebarred Kanehara and Roger Gomez submitted Aoki with simple ankle stretch. "Don't let them win by leglock! This is our last ego saver!! (Sakurai >Rodriguez>Nogueira) (Aoki>C****** E***">Marcelo Garcia)"
I watched how Tonon finished Aoki and came to a conclusion that this American was a technically better Leglock specialist than Aoki was. It's hard to admit but there is an American (who's supposed to be roided monster with so-so skill) who outmaneuvers top Japanese grappler in the war of leglock. Thank you Garry Tonon for making us humble and giving us new homework.
And at last, I really want to see someone shutting up whoever was doing commentary for this fight. He's the most annoying individual I've heard in my life. Is he even a fighter?
