Not that the ranking system is flawed by any means. But what we are seeing is fighters who are reluctant to fight below their rank. No one wants to fight Zabit, no one wanted to fight James Vick, unless it is guys coming off a loss / injury.
Solution-
Having more tournaments throughout the year where the winner moves on and the loser does not. This way #3 wont be upset facing #6 since a win will propel him forward. And the best part is, if there is an injury, then the #3 can fight an even lower ranked guy.
Hypothetically if we see a welterweight tournament go down:
Woodley vs Usman.
Askren vs Lawler.
Colby vs Till.
Ponzi vs Thompson.
Do you think this solves anything? Or we will still see the same old BS where fighters make "buisness decisions". In my opinion this way when a fighter pulls out or refuses to fight another guy, it kind of forces their hand.
