I'm one of the biggest Conor nuthuggers on this forum, so this is not a hate thread but a genuine question - When you consider how limited Conor's skills are but how far he's managed to get with them regardless, could you rightfully consider him to be an overachiever?

Yes.

Edit: yes and no..

Yes because i believe he was given alot of push from the bosses on his way on to the title shot. From good match ups, to special treatment behind the scenes.

No because it takes alot of legit fighting skills, crazy confidence, luck, and a will to risk alot in order to get it all. Conor was willing to gamble and risk alot. And it paid off.

So yes and no.

His performance against Eddie was really something special. I still think he's in the top 3 at 155 until proven otherwise.

I don't think he has limited skills at all tbh. His striking at his best is light years ahead of anyone else in the divisions he has fought in. And it's not as if he's completely useless on the ground, he has lost to extremely good grapplers.

Yes

Conor today is basically the same Conor as 2014 besides his improved grappling his striking technique and skill hasn't improved at all.

Conor had all this time to improve holes in his game and become possibly one of the most well rounded mixed martial artists of all time but was loyal to his team who kept reteaching him the same stuff over and over again and feeding his ego.

Conor's cardio, reaction time, and overall athleticism has declined as well over the years due to his terrible nutritionist, terrible cardiovascular regime, over consumption of cocaine and alcohol, and eating too much fucking meat and protein (seriously read somewhere this guy eats 200g of protein a day and trains on an empty stomach, no wonder his cardio sucks his nutrionist is fucking dumb as fuck).

Conor is basically the same Conor as 2014 but a deteriorated version in a deteriorated body and an egotistical and unhealthy mindset fed to him from the people around him.

THINK Jon Jones but without the athleticism.

100% love or hate conor the guy's done things beyond most mma fighters dreams. Gotta respect the man's hussle.

A little bit maybe? He's a true specialist. His scrambling from the back is very rudimentary, but it doesn't matter that much to him since the only one that can take him down consistently are elite wrestlers like Chad and Khabib. And those are 2 of the most technical wrestlers in the entire sport, not just their respective divisions. He's very similar to Anderson in this regard.

Conor is so dominant at what he does though, most fighters can't handle it without breaking mentally.

Don't think there was anything flukey about his run at FW, wasn't particularly easy either, fought Holloway, Poirer and Mendes before getting a crack at Aldo so I don't really buy into this favorable matchup myth. Was he lucky that Eddie was the champ at the time rather than someone like Tony or Khabib? Slightly perhaps but Eddie is no bum despite what the haters will want you to believe and was at least a top 4 guy at the time, GSP for example was far luckier to get a chance at being double champ against Bisping who was a very unlikely champion.

if anything conor has been an underachiever in my books.

after beating diaz who was 3 times the size of him, i expected him to move up to welterweight and knock woodley out.

the thing is, triple weight champ right there in the making. just cant get there.

No. Simply because. End of the day he beat 2 champions. 1 future champion. And multiple top contenders. Yes his grappling is shit but shows you how good his striking is

Its far better to be elite in one area and serviceable at everything else than be a good all rounder but master of none.

Used size, length and intimidation to beat mostly smaller (imo sometimes better)fighters. However, he had to have a very good skill level to beat the opponents of similar size., dustin and Nate.

An overachiever wouldn't have lost to those grapplers. Forrest was a classic overachiever in that he had no elite skillset and still managed to beat elite fighters and win the title.

Conor is an achiever who got a leg up from the UFC but in no way do I discount his skills.

Anybody who goes from bum to multimillionaire in 4 years could be called overachiever I guess
