Why eliminate contenders in an absurdly shallow division?

Ngannou has already proved he is not a contender. This fight is about Blaydes avenging his only loss.

yeah, if blaydes loses it totally fucks up HW. ngannou is the only guy on a W out of stipe, blaydes, volkov, black beast, etc.

props to curtis for staying active tho and not trying to sit out for a fight. dc wasnt gonna fight him anyways, so he'd be wasting his prime away sitting around for something that wont come.

UFC, and pretty much everyone is confident Blaydes will win this rematch. It will be pretty shitty for the division if he does lose though

heavyweight is so shallow they have to make fights like this one.

Stipe is out.

Dayna wants to promote Francis and hopes that if he wins, his ford escort handed fighter will make him money.

The winner fights Stipe for ths #1 contender spot.

Its classic shitty UFC matchmaking

Guy with undefeated record loses title shot, so they take him behind the barn like old yeller

UFC knows Stipe broke Francis mentally, so they're trying to salvage his future by giving him a guy he's already beaten

They've made it clear they want Francis to leave UFC a broken man. Dana thought he had a special fighter and hes felt burned by FN's lackluster performances. Think he regrets that Ford escort hype?? Lok

Where’s this contender Burke Lesnar fellow everyone always talks about? Surely, he must keep active.

The best case scenario is Blaydes beating Ngannou. If Blaydes loses again, it not only sets him back, but also does nothing for Ngannou immediately

Blaydes needs this win back as much Ngannou needs to prove he is still a top HW.

For the fighters...it's good but the fight benefits Blaydes more. He can avenge his only lost and take Ngannou's spot.

It's a baffling, baffling fight.
If Blaydes wins, okay he erases his career loss. But its probably not getting him closer to the title given that Ngannou has lost twice in a row now in terrible fashion. Likewise, this would possibly shove Ngannou way down the ladder and on his night, he's entertainment gold.

The right move was something like Miocic vs. Blaydes (#1 contender fight, guaranteed title shot for the winner) and Ngannou vs. a one dimensional banger, someone like Tuivasa or JDS. Hell even someone like Ivanov.
