That shocked me.

The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer and International (DTCI) segment announced today that ESPN+, the multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from DTCI in collaboration with ESPN, has surpassed one million paying subscribers in just over five months since its April 2018 launch.

“Reaching one million paid subscribers is an important milestone for any video subscription service, but reaching this benchmark in such a short amount of time is an incredible testament to the teams from DTCI and ESPN who have worked tirelessly to bring this product to market and continually improve it since our April launch,” said Kevin Mayer, chairman, Direct-to-Consumer and International, The Walt Disney Company. “We’re thrilled so many sports fans have quickly come to love the service. The future is bright and we believe growth will continue as we add features, distribution partners and more exclusive content in the coming months.”

Jimmy Pitaro, President of ESPN and co-Chair, Disney Media Networks added, “Combining sports, technology and the ESPN brand is a very powerful combination, and we are just getting started. Very quickly, a wide range of sports fans have seen the value of ESPN+. With high quality programming and an outstanding user experience, ESPN and DTCI are expanding the ways Disney is serving sports fans.”

Top Rank Boxing and UFC: Thanks to a comprehensive agreement with Top Rank, ESPN+ has become a boxing destination showcasing top U.S. and international championship fights, as well as comprehensive coverage of up-and-coming prospects and contenders. Additionally, starting in January 2019, ESPN+ will offer 30 Fight Nights, of which 20 are exclusive to the service as a result of a multi-year agreement between DTCI and the UFC.

I did not think it had that early popularity & certainly not before UFC started (they will be a lot of programming for ESPN+)

Doesn't seem like a lot, actually—especially considering this is supposed to be one of Disney's core three subscription services.

Will be curious how much it goes up after they start putting their top content on there. I still think the smart move was to unify all their content on one streaming service if they're serious about competing with Netflix.

Not that surprised

It's the only way to access a lot of ESPN content without paying $100+/mo on cable.

Not really about the UFC per se...

In the first five months of existence, that's pretty damn good, but obviously just a starting point.

How much is the subscription?

And don’t say tree fiddy

Isn't there a big gap between the people cutting the cord and the ESPN+ subscribers?

Did everyone else just go straight to pirate streams?

If so, unless ESPN+ follows the Netflix model with a cheap, reliable and dead simple product, they're probably never getting those customers back.

I think the idea is that getting some back is better than nothing

The problem is that they are still beholden to their cable tv model and cannot air much of their live content on online services due to contractual reasons... carriers pay a lot of money to have ESPN on their cable plan and they don't want to compete with ESPN's web streaming

As long as this is the case and they want to have their cake and eat it too (both traditional cable and streaming revenue) the streaming stuff will always be somewhat niche

wonder how many subsriptions DAZN has had in the last...what, 10 days?

How much is the subscription?

"Disney and ESPN will be hoping the UFC'S young fan base will embrace ESPN+, which costs $4.99 per month, or $49.99 for the year." May 8, 2018

Add in Fight Pass for another $5 (if you have ESPN+).

That shocked me.

ESPN conned WME.

Joshua fights on Saturday, so hopefully a lot
but it is a weird comparison
ESPN+ is US , so 1m is really a lot this early
DAZN has different content across the globe with different areas having different services/plans

Tens of millions a month revenue is nothing when channels like Sky in the UK sell for 35 billion$

They need to be 10x that number of subscribers and even that is a failure.

interesting to see if DAZN will be able to compete in the combat sports atmosphere. They've got some pretty solid content.
