"Saturday's UFC Fight Night bout between Gilbert Burns and Olivier Aubin-Mercier has been removed from the card at Amway Center in Orlando. Upon his arrival, the UFC medical team determined that it would be unsafe for Burns to cut additional weight necessary to meet the 156-pound limit. The card will proceed as scheduled with twelve fights."

Did they look at the guy and the situation was so bad they went "dude, you are too fat, better not even try... gtfoh"

Has this ever happened before? Because the UFC has always let people go through excruciating cuts and never did a thing

EDIT/UPDATE(via mmafighting):
"According to sources, Burns arrived in Orlando weighing 186 pounds. The UFC is currently hoping to reschedule him on the April 14 UFC on FOX 29 card. Aubin-Mercier is expected to fight sooner."

Has this ever happened before?

This apparently happened to Hardy on the scale in Bellator.

What happens to the opponent? Has to make weight? Do they get paid?

They spent a lot preparing for this fight.

It's Wednesday. How fat you have to be that on first sight it's clear you won't make it to cut till Friday/Saturday.

there are a lot of information missing here.
Heck, we had fighters miss by 6 Lbs or more, and they didn't scratch the fight...
I reckon it depends on the fight or the fighter??

let's just get rid of weight cutting so that these fighters can focus on fighting?

The fucked up thing about this is that we know his opponent is not getting paid for making weight, going through a training camp and doing what he's supposed to.

He makes $18k to show. I think the UFC will at least give him that.

edit: it also depends on whether he accepts or refuses a replacement opponent. Remember that the UFC is under no legal obligation to pay him. They do it because it's a show of good faith and is ultimately good for business. In this case, it's quite late in the game, so I don't know how much the UFC will be looking for a replacement. They might just let the fight die and pay the $18k

Nope, they won't give him shit.

They usually don't. It would be unusual for them to do so.
If your opponent fails to make weight, you don't get paid by the UFC. We've heard this too often.

It's crazy.

Yea. They used to pay the guy if they make it to the weigh in. Lately, they stopped doing even that.

I don't think they are being literal. He most likely met with doctors and probably didn't look to well.

Yea. They used to play the guy if they make it to the weigh in. Lately, they stopped doing even that.

Do they refuse to pay fighters who make as little as $18k? Is there precedent for that? Especially if they havent turned down an alternate opponent?
