UFC 66 - Liddell vs Ortiz 2 (1,050,000 buys)

Lidell had already TKOd Ortiz in their first encounter at UFC 47 with that nasty combo.

Interesting to note that this fight only did 100k buys.

Both guys went on a 5 fight win streak leading up to their rematch, Liddell with 5 KO/TKO and Ortiz with 2 KO/TKO and 3 decisions.

The ambience for this fight was electric and the build up from the first fight was epic. The crowd was chanting Chucks name throughout the fight and most of the people were on their feet for it.

Chuck destroyed Tito again, he just had his number and Tito knew it after almost getting finished in rd 1 but Yamasaki really gave him a chance. Liddell went on to TKO him in the 3rd.

I also noticed that Eddoe Bravos live scoring was showing on the big screen between rounds and the fighters were able to look up at it and see it. Defenitly changes the tempo of a fight imo.

So there you have it, the first 1 million buys PPV main event

Neat. I never liked either of them.

I almost quit watching UFC after that.

That was also the night Keith Jardine made Forrest Griffin cry & run out of the octagon. Weird moment.

Yeah.

Watching Chuck beat the piss out of Tito is a pleasant memory.

Probably why Tito's skull was cracked in the first place. It would take a guy with Liddell level power to do that.

That was the first fight where I felt the UFC was truly mainstream. I remember grabbing beer and the guy ringing me up asking if I was watching it that night. It was really weird because you have to remember a year prior to that fight UFC basically was doing 100k-200k max.

Sidenote I believe those fights were on friday nights if my memory serves me right.

The hype for Chuck was insane. Hell, it got me thinking he was unbeatable until his jaw rusted up.

This was so satisfying for me. Tito had ducked Chuck for years to deny him a shot at his UFC LHW title and Chuck just beat him down when Tito was looking to get the strap back from Liddell. Fucking Karma

This fight led to Tito's marriage to Jenna the pornstar because she finally saw someone who had taken more shots to the face than she had.

Ha ha, Forrest was a great fighter, got every inch out of himself but he was a strange cat. I've read his first book and was funny and odd.
