Anyone find it strange that Dana White signs guys like Charlie Ward but doesnt sign Ben Askren ?

So this guy gets a chance but Ben Askren didnt ? upload_2017-11-24_16-9-34.png

Ben wanted fair compensation and not to sign away all his rights. Dana can't have that. It had nothing to do with Ben's style.

One guy was filling up a spot on the undercard and friends with the top draw in the organization. The other was deemed unnecessary by Joe Silva.

Nah

Askren was full of shit
Wanted too much
and he doesn't deserve it
Another Chael wannabe

Didnt want someone on the roster that could put Ambien to sleep

Multiple sources in the UFC have told me that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva does not want to sign Askren, but he'll likely end up signing with the promotion because people higher up than Silva in the chain of command want to bring the former Olympian into the fold.

By the time Silva left, Askren had signed a big deal with One.

Charlie ward can be used to fill the highlight reel of someone they want to promote

Askren could ud guys they want to promote

Personal Vandetta.

This is exactly why the UFC can't be compared to actual profressional sports.

If you're an elite football player, you're getting signed to a team in the NFL...regardless of whether or not the commissioner likes you.

I think Colin Kaepernick would disagree with you.

Of all the fighters who haven't signed with the UFC, why do we care about Askren not being in the roster?

All those fucking fighters but fans whine about the boring wrestler not getting signed... Lol

Dana White has always wanted the top fighters in the UFC, despite what his "haters" (lame word, but appropriate) have said/thought. He straight fanboy-ed when he thought they were going to sign Fedor, after all the years people speculated he "hated" Fedor because he was so good.

The truth is if he/the front office think you're asking for too much....they're going to let you walk, despite how good you may be. He's a big Hendo fan....but he let him go to Strikeforce when Dan wanted what they thought was too much. It was obvious how much he wanted Fedor, but they wanted WAY too much. It goes on and on. Shields, Bader, Rory, Fitch, Okami, Moose, Davis....all guys who are really-good-to-great fighters that they had to let walk due to them wanting/expecting more than they could pay them (based on their marketability).

Of course, the exceptions to the rule are legit icons who actually bring the eyeballs and $$$s. Fighters like Conor/GSP/Brock/Prime (LOL) Rousey...say what you want about in-cage skill, but they brought the PPV buys, so they get the money. Ben may have had the pedigree, but never the selling power.

I'm sure Askren is holding out for big bucks. Alvarez did the same thing when he was considered "the best fighter NOT signed to the UFC."

He came in making bank... & also had it negotiated that he would get PPV points if he made it to the title. Typically the "challenger" doesn't get PPV points unless they got buzz. Hell the Champ isn't guaranteed to be getting them either... lol.... but Alvarez got em.

Most people who enter the UFC get $8,000 to show & $8,000 to win. Alvarez got $100,000 to show for his first 3 fights. (no win bonus)

for his championship fights... he got 150K taking the title from Pettis + PPV points & then $540k vs Conor (not sure one way or the other if he got PPV points on that one.)

So maybe Askren is holding out for that kind of pay day.

LOL and if UFC had signed him.. TS would probably be crying about Askren being boring and bringing the blanket to every fight

I remember hearing someone quip on a Heavy Hands podcast once that the worst kind of fighter to be, in the estimation of the UFC, is "dangerous but boring." Someone who'll screw up the records of your fighters that have more fan-friendly styles. Someone too good to ignore for high-level bouts but who is guaranteed to not inspire the fandom to lay out their PPV-buying cash.

Askren fits the "dangerous but boring" label to a T(D).
