and use the ranking system for seeding brackets only?

Why would they do that?

Reset titles? That would mean a tournament format. And no, you can't do that when you're realistically only able to fight a few times a year.

Why would they do that?
It wouldn't be good for them or the fighters to do so.

This it would only work in tournament format.
Which notoriously doesn't work with injuries and what not .
Most fighters are lucky these days to get 3 fights a year in.

Good question. The UFC was founded on the seeded tournament format and although they did it in 1 night which isn't realistic today, a top 7 for the year is. It would keep divisions lacking depth fresh every year for example.

Sure, they could also hand out several titles in each weight class for no reason... much like they already do in some weight classes.
Maybe they could make a cool glowing belt with skulls on it for Dana - The Warrior King of the UFC.

normally i would shit on this but seeing as the ufc belts are about as prestigious as the belts in glow wrestling i say anything's worth a try!

That being said it would stop people holding onto belts and not defending them that's for sure.

So, how is that gonna play out? The top guys in the division fight each other every year in a tournament format, and a champ is crowned by the end of the year?

Every division should hold an 8-man bracket for that years title. Fight once every 3-4 months. Running concurrently you have people outside the bracket fighting for a place in the next years bracket and/or to fill in as an alternate. Top 3 or 4 finishers get automatically seeded into next year while the bottom 5 or 4 get relegated to qualification/alternate status.

This way you have no ducking contenders or cherry picking opponents. If you don't like a champion, you reset the next year.

People are shitting on TS, but at this point, with the absurdity of UFC titles recently, maybe we should think outside the box?

Like what if a tournament lasted 2 years, or 18 months, and they stagger the weight divisions to always have something going... fuck I know it sounds dumb, but nothing is dumber than recent UFC title shenanigans.

Can't be done. If the fighter perceived as being the best misses out on one single fight, he wouldn't win the tournament, and the tournament would be rendered worthless.

It simply cannot be done.

Deserve has nothing to do with it. You gotta earn it.

If we had active champions who would defend and just let them gear up for the sake of reducing injuries this wouldn’t be a discussion. Not to bash TS, but this would never work in combat sports regardless.

why, they can just fight again next year, you don't get a pass for missing a fight for being injured or something.

If Roger Federer misses out on the US Open due to injury, he can go for it again next year etc
