Has anyone noticed how lazy Rockhold's striking defense is? It's been pretty evident in his last two fights. Bisping lit him up for one of the biggest upset KOs in UFC history and in his return fight with Branch, he was getting lit up early with big punches. I was surprised none of those hurt him.
Don't get me wrong, Branch is a talented fighter but he isn't on Whittaker's level when it comes to boxing and overall power punching. Whittaker can dead you with one punch and that isn't something Branch is known for. If Rockhold went into a fight with Whittaker with this lazy striking defense that has been on display lately, he gets lit the fuck up, no question.
Rockhold benefits from being a long, rangy fighter. It can be hard for guys to get to his chin at times. This causes him to be a bit nonchalant and unconcerned with keeping his hands high. But as you can see from the Bisping fight, that is bound to catch up with him at times. If Branch was more of a power puncher, Rockhold would have been face first on the canvas.
Rockhold has fight like this his entire career, I'm honestly surprised this style of his didn't get him caught any sooner, but this is how he fights. I don't see it changing any time soon. All I know is, if he ends up fighting Whittaker, he's going to get caught eventually employing that style. And when he does, he isn't going to eat those punches as easily as he did against Branch.
