SIR

Just a month after picking up his third straight UFC victory, Surrey’s Jeremy Kennedy (11-0, 3-0 UFC) has his next appearance in the Octagon already booked.

The Revolution MMA product will head to Sydney, Australia to take on local favourite Alex Volkanovski (15-1, 2-0 UFC) as part of the UFC Fight Night event, scheduled to take place at Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday, Nov. 19. UFC officials confirmed the matchup with Province Sports on Wednesday.

In less than a year on the UFC roster, Kennedy has established himself as one of the brightest up-and-coming talents in the featherweight division. After winning his debut at home in Vancouver last August, the 24-year-old went on the road to Fortaleza, Brazil for his sophomore appearance and registered a unanimous decision win over former Ultimate Fighter: Brazil winner Rony Jason. Last month, Kennedy ventured to Long Island and collected his third straight unanimous decision victory, dominating Kyle Bochniak to push his overall unbeaten streak to 11.

Volkanovski debuted in the UFC last November after amassing a 10-fight winning streak on the regional circuit in his homeland. Following a second-round stoppage win over Yusuke Kasuya in his maiden voyage into the Octagon, the man from Windang, New South Wales collected his second consecutive UFC victory in June, beating Japanese veteran Mizuto Hirota by unanimous decision.

The featherweight ranks been front and centre over the last several years thanks to Conor McGregor’s pursuit and capture of the divisional crown prior to being stripped of the belt following his lightweight title win at UFC 205 last November in New York City. Even with McGregor out of the picture, the 145-pound weight class has remained strong, with Max Holloway ascending to the throne in June and the crop of potential contenders continuing to expand.

Earning a fourth straight UFC win and pushing his record to a perfect 12-0 won’t put Kennedy in title contention, but it should bring him closer to cracking the Top 15 and earning an opportunity to face more established opposition in 2018.

The November 19 event in Sydney is headlined by a heavyweight clash between local icon Mark Hunt (13-11-1, 1NC), the Kiwi knockout artist who makes Sydney his home, and rising Polish contender Marcin Tybura (16-2).

Good scrap

Not sold on Volk at all yet

I like this fight. Both guys are talented prospects who have picked up some solid wins so far. Tough choice but think I'm going with Kennedy to get the win.
