Drug Testing Now Hurts More Than Helps The Sport

Drug testing in MMA has gotten completely out of control. It was implemented to improve the business but I just see main event after main event being ruined because of even "potential anti-doing violations." Drug testing has taken precedence over the actual sport. It's like the tail is wagging the dog. Drug testing was brought in to help - not hurt the sport.

It's been about 20 years since Josh barnett was stripped of his title but at least they held the fight and stripped him afterwards. These days they cancel the fight. It's been 20 years and more cards are being ruined because of drugs than were 10 or 20 years ago.

Catching guys using banned substances IS how it helps.

No one on the top with money to pay for the good stuff will get caught. It doesn't help.

That doesn't hold water. Brock Lesnar was caught. Jon Jones was caught. Anderson Silva was caught. These are the top money guys.

I think they should revise what substances to ban.

Mighty Mouse for example takes it to the extreme, not taking any supplements at all, because he's saying Fuk it I don't need to be bothered over this.

Don't think the issue was ever about the number of cards ruined, it was about trying to clean up the sport to get it allowed into the mainstream to make the most money possible.

it hurts because everyone is getting popped. like someone else said top money guys. if they get caught and benched it hurts the sport of mma because you need stars to stay afloat

PEDs abuser fighter ruining the life of a good clean fighter is what ruins the sport.

That's what we were saying when we heard USADA was being introduced.

We would get shittier fights, a lot of our favs forced into retirement, Bellator or Rizin, events cancelled, a lot of top fighters losing their rankings, tons of threads with PED complaints, etc.

Could you list some examples of that happening? After all, a lot of people liked PRIDE the best, they say it was the pinnacle of MMA yet they had no drug testing. Yet PRIDE had more stars as a percentage of their entire roster than any promotion before or since. PRIDE wasn't ruined by drugs; it was ruined by organized crime.

Could you list some examples of that happening?

Lesnar VS Hunt

TRT Vitor VS Anybody

Bisping VS Wanderlei

And all those guys who were wrecking competition and have fallen hard after USADA like Hendricks and Weidman

Bisping lost to a couple of guys that he might very well have beaten if they weren't on what they were on. Assuming Bisping is clean, would you agree that his career was hampered by pre-USADA drug testing?

there are too many things on the BSL that shouldn't be on. shit like caffiene, or tylenol, etc.

we need to distinguish between STEROIDS and WEED.

they shouldnt be treated the same way,

I think there are probably some things on the list that could be re-evaulated, but steroids and weed ARE treated differently under the current standards, aren't they?

No, you said "PEDs abuser fighter ruining the life of a good clean fighter is what ruins the sport." Lesnar couldn't have been "wrecking competition" because he'd been retired from MMA for 5 years! He has another job. Then he came back to fight at UFC 200. That did not ruin the sport or even the card. Lesnar being on the card actually saved UFC 200 from disaster. Hunt's life was not ruined by Lesnar. He made more money that night than he ever has or will in one fight.

Vitor was an asset to the sport. What "life of a good clean fighter" did Vitor actually ruin?

Finally, what is your proof that "drugs ruin the sport"? When was there a time when there were no drugs in MMA and it was clearly superior to The MMA of the last 25 years? The fact is, it's never been proven that a drug free MMA is superior and makes more money than what we've had in the UFC or had in PRIDE because there has never been a successful MMA promotion which was drug free.

For as much as people are pissed a USADA what about putting the blame where it lies. The Fighters..They choose to either a) Take the Banned substance. B) Not verify that their supplement is safe(Which I think is a bullshit excuse more of the time) instead of taking responsibility for what they are putting into their bodies.

As somebody said earlier MM is a prime example of somebody that does not want to take the chance.

This USADA era is similar to the Prohibition era of The USA. Prohibition was found to be a disaster. We live in a drug culture. It's a chemical world and that will only increase as pharmaceutical technology grows. It's in the nature of human beings to take drugs. People who want a "drug free MMA" are just not realistic. BTW, there is no correlation pertaining to any promotion that shows when they were drug free or even almost frug free, they did better than when they allowed PEDS or at least tested less invasively.

The most financially successful (per-capita in the area where they held shows) promotion there has ever been was PRIDE. They drew more people to their shows in Japan than The UFC draws to its shows in the USA! PRIDE drew over 90,000 fans to some of its shows. UFC has never done that in The USA or come close and we have far more people than Japan. PRIDE's approach - no drug testing. They realized it is in the nature of human beings to take drugs and there will nebver be any such thing as a big money-making drug free MMA promotion. None of the major sports are drug free. Baseball did its best when they weren't testing!
