Old story but relevant to Bisping's ability to stay at the top for so long.

Bisping's wresting is consistently underrated because of his nationality, the stereotype being that English MMA fighters cannot wrestle.

But Bisping has quietly become one of the best counter wrestlers in the middleweight division and he has done so with a few basic strategies:

  • Initiate the clinch first
  • Don't over extend when striking
  • Use the fence and then escape from it
When he feels that fighters are looking to shoot in to take him down or just to clinch, Bisping will change levels to get his center of gravity lower than his attacker and clinch first, as if he is going for a takedown. (pictured below)

The perfect complement to this trait for Bisping is his intelligence and Fight I.Q., as he knows when to pour it on and when to ratchet back the power in order to defend.

Solid Post man. Thanks for the insight.

That's actually spot on. Excellent to see other people recognize the X's and O's to these techniques. Hate Bisping but he's got solid TDD for a Brit.

That's exactly how Jones beat Cormier and Glover.

Bisping also has that weird Chuck-like ability to get to his feet immediately after takedowns, or to ensure that he is very rarely ever held down. The Sonnen fight comes to mind.

I think the only one who did I continuously was Kennedy.

So... what's the trade off? Are we discussing that, or just the TDD?

He also has good head control in the clinch which he uses to shut down his opponents offence and control them against the fence.

People don't realise but he's an insane counter wrestler. People should watch his fight at lhw against Rashad. That was a damn close fight and rashad has...or rather had....insane wrestling

Bisping has fought every great wrestler and beaten/draw/robbery-UD against him.
