So this past weekend I attended my first ever live UFC event, UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs Lobov. Here's a list of my various observations and experiences throughout the event.
Too much industrial techno rock music blaring between fights. The music was super loud and shook the building when there was any bass.
It's much louder when a take down lands than I expected, do they mic the mat?
I was surprised at how much the sound of kicks landing reverberated around the arena.
It was difficult to decide whether to watch the live action or the television screen. Much more difficult to discern what was happening watching the live fight but much cooler than watching the screen.
The crowd was pumped at the beginning of the night, being the most energetic during Sandoval/Schnell and Barbarena/Proctor.
The WMMA fights killed momentum. The crowd was nearly silent during these back to back fights.
Davis/Dandois was just as terrible live. Embarrassing fight.
Surprisingly, despite the WMMA fights being very boring, the crowd never really booed, much more boos for Dodson/Wineland which in my opinion was a much better fight.
Crowd was firmly in support of Holtzman in his fight against McBride.
There were lots of "Woo!" Shouts throughout the night. Just as annoying, if not more, live than on television.
Several USA chants during the Moreno/Ortiz chants as well as people shouting derogatory remarks towards Moreno because of his nationality. Pure class.
Not a huge Perry fan but that KO was absolutely brutal. Jake was down for so long, it was kind of scary. They brought out a stretcher but turned back and Ellenberger left on his own.
We saw at least 5 fights break out in the crowd, including one in the section right next to us. It looked as though one dude got KO'd as a large crowd was gathered. It was dark and kind of far from where we were. After several minutes saw some guy being helped out of the arena.
Hilarious hearing people around me give there ill informed breakdowns of fights to whomever was with them. So many casuals trying to seem like they know what they're talking about. "I don't care what you say, the blonde chick has amazing takedowns" And "He could have avoided that elbow if he just ducked" were some of the gems.
Crowd was definitely clueless as OSP set up the Von Flue choke. Absolute silence until the tap.
Naturally there was the Tap out shirt wearing bro sitting near us. He was shouting and attempting to bully anybody around him. He kept yelling "You like Trump?" At every body that near him. Luckily security came and escorted him out about halfway through the main card.
Crowd loved Sanchez but cheered loudly when he was KO'd. It was brutal watching Big John prop his lifeless body against the cage as he tried to wake him up.
Crowd was behind Swanson in main event which surprised me as there were several Irish flags in the crowd, presumably in support of Lobov.
It makes for a long night being in a loud arena for 7 hours straight and my fiancee and I were pretty exhausted and ready to go by the time the main event rolled around.
Overall, it was a fun experience and I would do it again. However I wouldn't say it is my preferred way to watch a fight, much easier to pay attention at home watching on tv.
