Why is Thompson never finished in MMA?

Normally these kickboxers get finished on the ground with ease.
 
He actually trained enough grappling before coming over?
 
Maybe he actually trained to improve his weak areas?

He's got the Wonderhead & Wonderjaw.
 
He was GSPs striking coach for some years before he started his MMA career.

He spent quite a bit of time at TriStar, a very technical camp with great wrestling coaches.

And spends alot of time at Serra-Longo, a very very grappling based camp.
 
There are a lot of guys who are just tough as nails that you'd think have been finished a number of times but isn't the case...
Thales Leites a good example--Only finished once in his career and that was early on.Went the distance with prime Anderson in an actual competitive fight.He took his worst beating as a pro vs Mousasi and after 14 minutes of getting his face pushed in, held a hail Mary guard for final minute to not get finished.Tough guy but there are many examples from different disciplines
