there are questions that need to be answered.

1. Which sport has better athletes
2. Which sport generates more buzz
3. Which sport will deligitimize the other first

In my opinion the UFC should make the move first. Get a few boxers that might be over the hill and willing to take the fight and put them in the cage against general fighters. Don't match them up against Grapplers. Give them a chance by giving them striking based fighters. What do you think guys, what would be the outcome

Let's take infielders from Major League baseball and make them cornerbacks in the NFL.

Let's take professional bass fishermen and make them into professional bull riders.

If you put boxers vs strikers it will pretty much be a kickboxing match?

there are questions that need to be answered.

1. Which sport has better athletes
Both sports have excellent athletes and some less athletic fighters. You get the super athletic guys like Ngannou or Woodley in MMA, and David Haye or Anthony Joshua in boxing. Then you remember the plethora of fat Polish plumbers you get in boxing to go along with your Roy Nelsons etc.

2. Which sport generates more buzz
Depends where your trying to create the buzz. In the USA, MMA has got the edge on boxing right now because US boxing is at a low point. In the UK though on the other hand, boxing is booming while MMA is an afterthought. Joshua-Klitschko coming up at Wembley is going to be held in front of 90,000 people and will sell 1m+ PPV.
3. Which sport will deligitimize the other first
I don't think either will 'delegitimise' the other. There is a large crossover in audience as the way MMA is run and presented is far closer to boxing than any other sport. They will both have their own sets of individual fans though as they are different sports. Both sports will have different levels of popularity in comparison with each other over time, but they will both remain legit.
