in a given division. Why do so many always tend to treat the 2-4 fighters who are perceived as the best at the moment as head and shoulders above the rest? Putting a small group on a pedestal like this rarely works out.
HW - Cain and JDS were put on a pedestal, both lost to "clearly inferior" fighters
LHW - Jones and Gus were put on a pedestal, Gus lost twice to fighters dismissed against him
MW - Weidman and Rockhold... see pattern
...
tons more examples, but skip all the way down to WSW where JJ and Gadelha were viewed as being far superior to the rest even though Claudia lacked wins over other contenders
Now at LW we have Khabib and Tony being treated as head and shoulders above the field despite Ferguson only squeaking out a 48-47 win over RDA and almost getting KOed by Lando, the vast majority dismisses Eddie Alvarez (the former champion!)'s chances against him.
Why do we ie. much of the community put almost ALL stock in the handful of "hot" fighters in a division at the given time? Is it another sign of the MMA fanbase's immaturity (along with so many other things like the silly fad of thinking "more" movement automatically equates to superior skill)?
