Overeem has the lowest significant strikes absorbed per minute in heavyweight history, with 1.79. That is incredible! Overeem doesn't have bad striking defense, he just doesn't have a chin. He has by far the best stats in the heavyweight division. He really doesn't take much damage, which is why he articulate and seemingly has all his faculties intact.

Stipe: 3.26
Travis Browne: 4.15
Bigfoot Silva: 3.09
Ben Rothwell: 3.92

Roy Nelson: 4.55
JDS: 3.22
Frank Mir: 3.84
Andre Arlovski: 2.48
Cain Velasquez: 2.29

To put that into context, let's take a look at fighters who have 1 KO or less:
GSP: 1.38 (great defense and great chin)
McGregor: 4.55 (great chin, bad defense, power)
Dominick Cruz: 2.09 (great chin, great defense)

Conclusion:
For those of you who say he has severe brain damage because he has been KO/TKO'd 14 times in MMA/Kickboxing, think again! Absorbing very few hits over the course of his 20 year career has allowed him to continue fighting to this day. Having a glass jaw is actually good for your career.
We should be looking at multiple criterias when judging pure skill level. Alistar clearly has the best stats: striking accuracy, striking defense, and takedown defense.

Overeem is the best striker in the whole UFC. He just doesn't have a good chin after so many kickboxing and MMA fights. Crazy how he still can call fights eloquently without slurring

Wack chin and bad defense is a no-no specially if you are a HW.

Maybe glass jaw is good if it means you are extra diligent with your defence.

But I thought it was when people spar too hard day after day after day. The accumulated damage, especially if they are getting concust and don't take a break, that's where the real long term damage is done.

Can't absorb what you can't take.

That stat could just mean he gets knocked out with the fewest number of strikes. Not really a good thing.

I don't know if he ever had a good chin way back when.

It's because he runs away from people. His fight vs Stipe was absolutely embarrassing, he seemed absolutely petrified and sprinted away from Stipe every chance he got.

He still has the best defense in the heavyweight division. If he didn't get KO'd, everybody would be mesmerised at how good his ability to avoid strikes is.
Overeem is like a video game fighting character who is down to one tiny sliver on his life bar. He will die with any significant hit.

Jon Jones is the GOAT and guess what? He has already absorbed more cumulative career damage in his short career than The Reem!

If we are being logical, Jon Jones has a higher chance of slurring than Overeem.

Take away the JDS fight where they threw a combined 7 strikes the entire fight, and now give us the stat.

He used the same strategy in his 4 fight win streak: move around a lot, use single strikes, no combos, and be risk adverse. He couldn't get distance down because Stipe is so good at closing the gap.

As a huge Overeem fan he has to absorb low strikes because any strike that lands takes him out.

He needs to average about 3 strikes absorbed per 15 mins to win.

Overeem: 32
JDS: 22

If you took that off of fightmetrics sight subtract 28 and 19 from each for actual strikes landed.

For recent reference, they said Black Beast landed 39 strikes last night....he not only didnt even throw 39 stikes that fight, he maybe landed 4 before the final gnp.

You can't blame Conor for bad defense! He's just not defending at all :D

All he does is distance management and dodging if it suits for his counter left.

Yep War Overeem he was so close to the title. He thought he had that sub on Stipe. But it was not his night. I think he has some bad habits from kickboxing, when you saw him in K-1 he used his gloves for defense as a shell. He can't do that in MMA but he still occasionally kind of shells up with the MMA gloves.
