In 2008, Matt Serra was the underdog in his title defence against GSP. This is the last time a UFC champion has been an underdog in a title fight.

Fast forward to 2016, and we can expect 3 fights this year where the defending champion is the underdog:

Tyron Woodley is a +170 underdog against Stephen Thompson.

Eddie Alvarez is a +130 dog in his title defence against Mcgregor.

Nunes is a +150 dog against Rousey.

Fast forward to 2017, and Bisping is almost certain to be an underdog against whoever he faces next, Stipe would be the underdog to Cain, and Cormier/Rumble would be the underdog to Jones.

It's crazy to think that 6/10 UFC champions are not considered the best fighter in the division.

Woodley is going to knock Thompson stiff, these odds makers are a bunch of casuals.

The odds makers decide the opening odds. Oddsmakers had it even odds when it opened.

The betting public decided Thompson is a 2-1 favorite.
