The UFC before and after the sale are about making money, not how legitimate of a sport you can run. If they don't make profits you don't get fights. It's that simple. They don't have sponsorship deals and they don't have a strong enough foothold on television with a casual audience in order for it operate like a lot of people on here seem to think. I know a lot of MMA fans don't watch other sports and a lot of those that do think you can run everything the exact same way and it works. It's just not the case. MMA is still a fringe sport, and just like boxing it will always be more pro wrestling than it will ever be NFL/Soccer/NBA.
