There's a story with McGregor and Aldo. They have history. Conor knocked him out in dramatic fashion, and before that, Aldo was considered a pfp great. It would have been the first time Conor defended his title. Also, I have to imagine the interest level in a rematch would have brought in more ppv buys as well.

is the potential of being a two division champ bigger than all of that? Because really, that's the only thing to sell in the Conor/Eddie fight.

No.

There's a story with McGregor and Aldo.

The story is, they traveled the world for a year promoting a fight, then Conor knocked him out in 13 seconds, and now Aldo wants to quit the UFC. Not a great rematch story

who cares, it would be the matchup that has the most merit. The right fight to make.
they used to do that.

Champion vs champion super fight. Will sell way more. Not to mention we all know what Conor will do to Aldo again anyway.

No.

I remember a story, where some guy was suppose to be way better than everyone in the division. He had just won the belt. In his next fight the UFC went out of their way to promote the match up on Fox having just signed a gigantic deal with them. This was suppose to be the biggest fight in UFC HW history.

Their guy got knocked out in less than minute without anything else really happening.

The rematch was huge.....

Aldo vs Mac was the much bigger fight more fans were interested in.

You could have put Mac on the card vs anyone and it would sell due to his diehard Irish fans....That's just how it works.

Actual MMA fans wanted to see Aldo vs Mac.

Well the first fights between those guys were barn burners. Aldo got slept in 13 seconds. It's not an easy sell.

Yes that was the fight to make. Two champions that haven't defended their title is not a super fight. It's the orgs way of saying this is the best shot colon has at winning the LW belt. If colon is so confident he would win, he could have defended his title and had an actual superfight after

Colon got a rematch after getting his shit pushed in and he didn't even win a fight to earn it

Would have been bigger with far better trash talk.... Demeaning, soul crushing, one sided, trash talk supported by a severe language barrier. People would have loved the lead up more than last time.

No
Champ v Champ is a lot easier to sell
Especially since Alvarez speaks English
To the casuals (who make the number difference) Aldo is a harder sell since he was KO'd in 13 seconds
There will be so much media in NYC & Aldo is the wrong opponent for this hype

Aldo getting a decision win for the #1 contender is not enough, he needs to bring back WEC Aldo.

Aldo is the interim champ.

The interim champ may end up defending his belt more than an active and healthy champ.

It's a disgrace, and anyone that condones this decision are beta followers.

None of that has to do with the query of which fight was "bigger"

He makes the company much more money than anyone else. That's the point. It's all about money and Jose has never brought eyes to game like Conor has notwithstanding his brilliant career.

The only thing that is going to stop this madness is for Alvarez to beat Conor's ass. It's bullshit that the UFC has let Conor hold the title for so long without defending it.
