Would WB vs Maia be the biggest grappler vs striker specialists fight ever in mma?

If they get to fight, has it ever gotten to this level before?

Who would you favor?

What fights between very high level grappling vs striking specialists do you remember?

Its crazy because usually in these type of matchups the grappler wins, unless its against an extremey high level striker, ala Wonderboy. Sick fight

nog vs cro cop. Of course nog could strike, but this was basically the definition of striker vs grappler

Gonzaga vs C.C. was the biggest IMO.

Gonzaga's grappling/ BJJ was the stuff of legend. People discredit it due to his total ineptitude in striking.

Gabriel tooled Werdum so badly on the ground BOTH TIMES THEY FOUGHT that it looked like Werdum was "inept" on the ground in comparison". Werdum (even when his striking was considered subpar had NO PROBLEM finishing the vastly superior grappler in Gonzaga vio KO.

CC was considered the pinnicle of strikking.

This was the biggest one dimensional grappler vs one dimensional striker contest in my memory.

The inept striking grappler knocked Cro-Cops head off of his sholders with t LHK. LMAO!

Oh PALEASE! Nog was 1,000 times the striker that Gabriel Gonzaga could ever dream of being in his wettest of all wet ones! Everyone expects that the striker ko's the grappler, or the grappler submits the striker (like Nog did to CC).

Nobody expected that GG would decapitate CC!

That was really crazy stuff, and I'm a big CC fan. Damn, those high kicks. Brutal.

Bigger than :

Chuck vs. Randy ?

Fedor vs. Cro Cop ?

Fuck outta here.

Its all or nothing, WB has excellent TDD but Maia is a grappling machine. KO or submission for sure.

I'd say so along with Werdum vs Overeem.

Silly. I was NEVER a spider fan, but claiming he has any lack of grappling skills is silly IMO, and should be met with venom if he has any fans left.

FFS Travis Lutter is a phenomenal submission grappler that Anderson submitted. Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen are no slouches grappling either and both tapped to the Spider!

Holly vs Ronda

Holly has a white belt in BJJ, while Wonderboy has a purple belt under one of the Machado brothers.

Your point is taken TS, Wonderboy vs Maia would be very much a striker vs submission grappler affair.

I'm just comparing high level striker vs high level BJJ. I know spider is a legit BJJ BB. Also Lutter gassed like no other. Sonnen got overconfident in his situation and Dan was getting smashed before submitted. I thought Wonderboy had decent JJ credentials? We just never see it.

Also sometimes the biggest factor against an elite striker vs BJJ is their wrestling.

The CroCop headkick win was no fluke. Gonzaga was a menace on the feet.

He has the same number of KO wins as submission wins.

Did you watch him challenge Randy for the title? He broke Randy's arm with a kick.

I am one of the biggest Gonzaga fans on this site, and I am certainly Coutures biggest nuthugger. No doubt that Gabriel is an extremely powerful man, and as such can do serious damage. Randy made no bones about it. He stated and I believe him that GG was a far worse matchup for him than the expected fight against Mirko. He said flat out that GG was far more rounded of a fighter than CC and was far more concerned having to defend his title against GG than CC.

As big of a nuthugger of Randy as I am, I could never lay claim that he was an above average striker in MMA. With that said, I also firmly believe that Randy still beat Gabriel in the standup, and had he not been able to seriously hurt Gabriel early, I fear it would have looked more like Randy's fight against Big Nog.
