As long as the UFC remains a low paying non-union bush league, real A Level athletes will never flock to MMA's highest weight classes. We all know this.

But this handy graph and article really drives the point home.

There are literally hundreds of 250, 260, 270 pound plus professional athletes just in the US. Fast, agile as fuck, and with good cardio. But they're going where the money is. We're left with Ruan Potts, beer belly Josh Copeland, and the guy with the creepy molester mustache.

If the UFC had paid real professional wages that would attract A Level athletes, Chuck Liddell would have been an Isaac Vallie-Flagg type journeyman.

Of course. MW and below will always be stacked. WW and LW each have 90 to 100 fighters. They have no where to go. You think Ross Pearson can play basketball?

Low pay = Black Beast vs. Big Country is a top ten fight.

Got smashed. Multiple times.

"A level athlete" =/= fighter.

If they were incentivized to go into MMA (real pay), they would be fighters.

Former UFC HW champ who started the sport late. Imagine if he went into MMA at 20 years old instead of to the WWE? He wasn't even a pro-wrestling fan growing up but they offered him real money.

There's this notion that big athletic guys with good cardio do not exist. They do. They just don't exist in MMA.

Being big and athletic doesn't make you a better fighter. Get that idea out of your head.

The most athletic MMA fighters are not the most successful ones.

He got destroyed by Cain, who isn't near the "athlete" Brock is claimed to be.

Again athleticism =/= fighting.

By your logic Kevin Randleman would have been nearly unbeatable.

Lol. Isaac Vallie-Flagg is such a random dude to pull up. I guess that's your point but that just came out of left field for me.

^ This

When the first punch lands on a non-martial arts trained athlete's face, all athleticism goes out of the window.

Fighting requires a different sort of fitness/toughness because mind can play tricks on the body. Getting punched plays tricks on your mind.

Lhw use to be the deepest in the late 2000s

Your right on. I always wonder as a pro fighter why mma fans don't get that in mma, just like any other physical sport, the stronger more athletic fighter has a higher chance of victory things being equal.

The graph doesn't support your argument since its just a collection of average height/weights and the UFC has other weight divisions other than HW whereas nearly everyone in the NFL is a HW.

If the UFC scrapped its 265lb limit, some heavys wouldn't need to cut, Struve could go on a horsemeat diet, UberTS sized guys who normally wouldn't have a chance at making 265 might give UFC a shot.

Why do people discount amateur wrestlers as A level athletes? I don't care if someone can drain a 3 pointer or hit a baseball. I care if they can take a punch and defend a takedown

Yes, a 30+ year old Brock who never had any fight experience had an average career and was smashed by chubby Cain (still a former HW champ).

But what of a 20 year old Brock who had been training since he was 15 because he always wanted to be a fighter? You're saying this Brock would have developed exactly the same as the actual Brock we saw?

The A Level athletes as they exist now in their respective sports are obviously not fighters. No shit! They most likely would not be able to successfully transition now to fighting even if they wanted to.

But what if the option to make real money in fighting existed when these A Level athletes were in their teens?

Brock was never a pro-wrestling fan but the WWE threw money at him anyway.

Thank you, people like Mark Coleman, Cormier, or Makhov are as top level as it comes.
