Judges unanimously award Pettis 10-8 for first round

I know the pic of the actual scorecard is floating around out there but I can't find it. For now, this will have to do:

In a very rare occurrence, Pettis was awarded a 10-8 score from all three judges for his display in the first round. Pettis appeared to gas in the middle period, however, but rallied to choke out the submission specialist with a guillotine choke in the third round.

What's everyone think about this? It was a good round for Showtime, but it was not a 10-8 in my opinion.

What's crazy is that if it had gone to the cards, with Pettis getting a 10-8 for rd 1 and Oliveira presumably getting a 10-9 for rounds 2 and 3, we'd have had a draw.

It's so weird that ALL THREE judges were in agreement on this.

Coach kavanagh is coming for that judge

Good round, I don't know about 10-8 but he really did beat the fuck out of Charles so who knows.

I'm interested to see what people who scored r3 Conor/Diaz 10-8 think

No it wasn't, the dude got his back like 2 times.

I am so happy Pettis won but a 10-8 round did not cross my mind for one second....

Like I said, awful judging. Lauzon got screwed.

Is British Columbia the new Brazil when it comes to judging

All three judges?

I guess I have to rewatch that round. I don't remember even remotely thinking it was a 10-8.

Great round for Pettis. A lot of damage and looked like he was gonna get the finish for a second.

Not a 10-8 though in my opinion.

Not a chance it was 10-8 he was controlled for half the round then got some good kicks in and some good ground control but not like he had him mounted and was reining down unanswered gnp rockhold weidman style

Louzon, Barzola, 10-8 Pettis first round... Seriously those horrible judges need to get put in the cage with the people they were screwing over lol (i.e. Barzola, J-Lou, and Oliveira)

I also hear they scored the first round of the Main 10-9 Condit

it should be a 10-8 but historically you need to do much more

maybe the athletic comission has better mma standards than some of the ancient boxing comissions

So judges are going to randomly hand out 10-8 rounds for no real reason just because they've been encouraged to now.

It's important to make use of 10-8's, but now more than ever, Dana's advice of "never leave it to the judges" is absolutely imperative.

Does anyone else recall a few month ago some announcement that judging was going to change and that there would be a LOT more 10-8s?

I do. Let me see if I can find a link.

This would be a perfect example of that phenomenon. By historical MMA judging there is no way that is a 10-8, but if the practice of judging were to change to award MANY more 10-8s rather than 10-9 unless near death, then maybe the damage Pettis did gets him the 10-8. (He fucked up Olivera's eye, looked to me like he maybe even broke his orbital the way it puffed up so quickly)

Edit - Here is mention of it but this link says it wouldn't go into effect until 1/1/17.

Edit #2
Here is another one- it passed but apparently doesn't go into effect until 1/1/17

Under the new verbiage, 10-8 rounds should be much more prevalent. Judges will be asked to look at three things: damage, duration and dominance. If two of those characteristics are present in a round, a 10-8 should be considered. If all three of them are present, then the round must be a 10-8.

The judging criteria is way too loose.
