If Conor leaves the FW division without defending his title even once, it would solidify the name "Conor McRunner". Never in the history of MMA, has there ever been an interim champ, who didn't fight for the title while the champ was healthy and active. There is no way of escaping the Aldo rematch without looking like a fluky chump.
The safe bet for UFC's cash cow, is to setup Aldo vs McGregor II. Most fans want to see this fight, even if it was after Conor vs Alvarez. If Conor loses against Aldo, they can always set up a trilogy (unless of course Aldo completely and premeditatedly embarrasses him for 5 rounds). If Conor gives up his belt to fight in another weight class, and he loses…he will be titleless and the legacy of the Aldo KO will turn into a fluke win. Alvarez is NOT Diaz, and based on Conor's last performance at UFC 202, he doesn't have a chance against a 5 round war veteran like Alvarez. The fighters are right. Conor is not a 5 round championship fighter.
Also, why would he vacate his belt in order to fight for anything other than a LW title fight? There is no money fight in the LW division that could justify debilitating the FW division. The UFC is valued at $4.1B. Conor's brand is not worth more than the company. Not even a division of the UFC.
McGregor vs Diaz II proves that outcomes in sequels are not predicated on the first fight. Conor fans are afraid of this fight, because there is the real threat of realizing that the 13 sec KO against Jose Aldo was a fluke. That's why they keep parroting things like "Aldo won't show up", and dismissing Aldo's ability to avoid Conor's power in the first two rounds. Since Dennis Bermudez already beat Max Holloway, Bermudez vs Holloway II can be on the same card in the event that someone pulls out.
The "Mystic Mac" illusion is starting fade, and the alphas among the fighters and MMA purists are growling, salivating, and patiently waiting for Aldo's redemption. There has never been a victory that is going to taste so sweet.
If Conor duplicates his success against Aldo at UFC 207; then yes, he would've earned a fight against the winner of Alvarez vs (Ferguson vs Dos Anjos) or Khabib. His time of reckoning is drawing to an end.
As for the real Conor fans, hang in there. He will be in contention again, once he has enough time to improve his flaws.
