The availability of mma gyms. Most are located in metropolitan areas. Meaning, most of the people training at mma gyms come from the surrounding areas. There aren't too many Matt Hughes around.

If a country boy from Alabama, Mississippi, Idaho or some other backwards place has a passion for the sport, what are his options? Move to an area by the closest gym, possibly a state or two over? And what if hypothetical country bumpkin doesn't have the income for that? Exactly.

People who live in the city have a huge advantage if their sport is mma. Same as boxing.

Institute amateur mma in high school like wrestling and the sport would probably have a plethora of Jethro athletes that don't have the opportunity like city folk do.

This will never change just because of economics and the nature of the sport, sadly.

Include mma into the Olympics. That's a start. Otherwise most of your talent is going to emerge from Europe and China.

They will have the same situation in Europe, but geographically it's much smaller, and China......I don't really need to say anything about China. They're packed into areas like sardines, so if the sport thrives there they will pump out talent like Exxon Mobile. And there's like 5 billion Chinamen.

So...really..... North America is at a disadvantage.

You know, you bring up an excellent point and your outlook is probably closer to reality. If an athlete has a passion for said sport he will find a means to an end and partake in his passion.

The sad truth is that 99% of people die with their songs unsung.

Of course it is more difficult if you don't have material advantage. Access to facilities and teachers, proper nutrition, and all else that is required.

Regardless of what you have heard, it takes money to be happy. Unless you are delusional and unmotivated or easily satisfied.
