Thats cause the american system of writing dates is unintelligent. Just like those other archaic measurement systems you use.
There are two rational modes of date notation:

Most general to most specific
Year-Month-Day

Or most specific to most general
Day-Month-Year (the european system)

Americans however chose the random system:
Month-Day-Year. Dafuck?
