Catch wrestling is the martial art most lacking in the current UFC roster. Josh Barnett is one of the only guys with a primarily catch background and look how great of a career he's had. There are plenty of UFC threats with Olympic style wrestling backgrounds. Catch incorporates that but also adds submissions! Part of the reason there are so few guys with a primarily catch background is that most of the masters of Catch wrestling are dead or dying such as Lou Thesz, Karl Gotch, Billy Robinson, etc.

Even catch-wrestling lacks catch-wrestlers. How many people even train in that discipline? It can't just basks on Sakuraba and Barnett's success eternally.

Need more TMA representation in MMA. Aikido can't be 100% BS, right? I mean, Jason DeLusional won some fights, right? What about Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do? You can't tell me a pioneer movie star like Brue Lee spent his life working on useless arts, right? How about the 72 secret arts of the famed Shaolin Temple? There's this Shaolin monk called Yi Long who had a bunch of MMA fights in the US, used some weird kung fu shit and actually did okay. Turns out he is a fake, but if a fake could have done okay, a real monk would do much better, right?

Wrong, boxing technique is lacking in MMA, everybody seems to love the overhands.

^ This ^ i was just about to say that. Guys lack the fundamentals, and can't box for shit. It sometimes gets hard to watch, seeing how atrocious guys can be. Not only they are not throwing the right combinations, they have no defence. The average mma fighters defence consists of, moving back and out the way so you are not in range. But that should be your last ditch effort defence. A good defence is being able to stay in the pocket. Either parry attacks, or use head movement. This way you are still in range to throw your own counter shots.

But because guys don't do this, is why we often see these fighters, just throwing one punch at a time, just looking for that knockout shot. And these type of attacks, are the easiest to defend. Then guys like Conor come and school everyone, not because he is a great boxer. Just because everyone else sucks. Then when he did actually meet a solid boxer in Nate, he got cracked. Because even he lacks basic defence of putting your hands up to protect your face. Thats why he was hit by guys like Siver, Brimage, and Mendes. He has good offence, but he needs to work defence more.

So that is what is lacking, is solid boxing. Once you learn to defend kicks, a good boxer will defeat a kickboxer anyday. I think guys would benefit tremendously, after they are competent enough with ground game and wrestling, if they would just focus on boxing for a little while. Not striking, just purely boxing. The timing to slip and duck under punches also gives you the ability to slip and duck into a takedown. That was why GSP was so good at takedowns, because of timing. Yes boxing will make your wrestling better in MMA! Look at Mayweather, when he ducks and then clinches a guy. Imagine if it was MMA, if a guy did that, you can also trip and take them down! Because you can duck straight into a double leg, or double underhooks, so you will have superior position every single time.

But your right TS, catch wrestling is lacking too, especially with certain leg locks and holds. We will start to see this in the future though.

Bullshit martial arts like Aikido

In terms of underrepresented martial arts that are legit? Idk

Catch wrestling is dying. It used to be synonymous with pro wrestling which was a demonstration of catch wrestling techniques, and every pro wrestler back in the day used to be able to handle themselves, but that is no longer the case. Most wrestlers nowadays couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag.

Sambo is often an overlooked mma discipline. Look at Fedor, Andre, and Khabib, they all have Sambo backgrounds and we're able to effectively use them. Andres Sub of Timmeh, Fedors clinch takedowns, Khabibs, throws, we're all elements of Sambo. Combate Sambo incorporates Judo, Wrestling, grappling, and striking. You combine that with Russian kettlebell training and you got a effective fighter.

I agree. In MMA its more of a evolutionary process. Jiu-jitsu dominated in the beginning and everybody learned it, then it was wrestling and counter-wrestling and now most of the dominant fighters are pretty good everywhere, but the gap between two fighters is shown mostly on feet while striking. Of course everybody is still different fighters but this is how i see it, and in couple of years we hopefully start to see more better stand up aswell as boxing technique. MMA is pretty young sport still and its hard to find the golden road between disciplines and skills, because its pretty impossible to be master at all of them.
I think if that happens, people start to recognize MMA as its own discipline, more than a combination of certain disciplines.

The success of boxer/wrestlers in the history of MMA is incredible. It is even more incredible considering how few of them actually have good boxing.

Wmma need more yoga techinique.....

Boxing of course. Also, taekwondo/karate has some interesting fundamentals that can be adapted to MMA.

catch wrestling has its merits

training in everything is still #1

Catch wrestling is certainly lacking from MMA as a whole.
