Anybody tried the men's health 2000m row challenge? Their aim is 7 minutes. First two attempts came in at 8.35 then 8.20 next day want to aim for at least 7.30 altough being a manlet at 5'5 makes rowing a difficult endeavour

5'8 here, but short short legs. 2k row is a pretty decent stand-in for vo2 max test, but I don't think i've ever gotten below the mid 7's

It would actually be pretty cool to have a 2000m row "competition" here on sherdog! I've barely used the rower as a training tool, and it's been at least 2 years since I rowed 2k, but it could be pretty fun to try out actually.

I think my best time is probabably around 8 min, so I don't know if we would train for it first or what.

Might have to try a 2k for time on the row, i have no idea what my time would be.
What level of difficulty? Easiest and just go or?

Max effort 2k row is one of the most painful things I will voluntarily do

4-5 on a concept2 is a similar resistance to actually rowing a race boat in the water.

I would rather do a half marathon, 8 x 800m reps, hill sprints than a 2k on a rower.....That bit of equipment just seems to utterly destroy me.

Recently I did a 1.37 for 500 but the thought of doing 2k really fills me with dread

    Insane! Wow that is crazy.

He has the perfect physicality for a 100m. Long limbs, insanely strong, very powerful, huge back, strong core.

I reckon thor would beat this record. It's pretty much a 4-5rm deadlift comp that favors tall people.

I think at one point someone did physical modeling and for a 6'0 200lb male, a 2k row is essentially a 28-30 rep per minute deadlift/high pull hybrid with 145lbs in terms of work done.

Perhaps a dumb question, since I've never used a rowing machine...

Is there technique involved here, or is it going to be really obvious what to do when I get on a rowing machine and body mechanics will force me to figure out technique?

There is technique, primarily making sure that body parts exert force in the right sequence (knees then back then arms)

I've always stayed away from the rowing machine because I can't manipulate my iPod while using it.

But i suppose for a 7 minute test I could just put on Master of Puppets or something and give it a go.

That's why i either do full albums or long-form podcasts usually.

I tried it once last year, when the guys at the crossfit gym I worked out at challenged me. I got 6:59.9. Plenty of laughs were had, as I beat their challenge literally by a 10th of a second.

I think I would've done a better time if the challenge didn't stipulate that I had to set it to 7. I think setting it at 10 would be more advantageous.

I tried this today and got 8 minutes. I was actually pretty happy with this time, being that I rarely use the rowing machine, and I think my technique was bad for most of it. I wasn't until I was probably 75% of the way done when I realized I was pulling with just my arms and barely using my legs.

Now that I've had this experience, I'm looking forward to trying again. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that I could hit 7:30 next time.
