WTF is going on? I think I am boycotting the olympics. Something must change. This is far too widespread.

The Ohio State diver first reported Bohonyi’s alleged abuse in 2014. She was 17 at the time, and claims Bohonyi forced her into numerous sexual acts, and into sending him hundreds of naked photos. She said she was sent home from a meet in Tennessee after telling her head coach about the allegations, while Bohonyi was allowed to stay....

The lawsuit comes while Ohio State is dealing with accusations that a team doctor sexually abused athletes in at least 15 sports in the 1980s and 1990s....

“Bohonyi psychologically coerced (the woman) into believing that she was required to perform sexual services in exchange for her continued involvement in diving,” the lawsuit read. “He preyed on her age, vulnerability, and dreams of becoming an Olympian, and used the power structure and imbalance of power (coach/athlete) to make her believe she was required to sexually service him in exchange for her involvement in diving for Team USA.”

Two questions...

1. Was she at the legal age of consent when the first sexual encounter occurred?

2. Is it against either the law or the policies of Ohio State for coaches to have romantic relationships with players?

The idea that a college aged athlete could believe a coach has the right to refuse to train players based on unwillingness to engage in sex acts is a tough one to swallow (no pun intended).

Pics of the diver?

You know I appreciate this. This story sucks, so I atleast appreciate the dark humor.

The gymnastics story was sad, and disturbing.

I will not be surprised if this is as bad or worse.

17 and 18 year olds aren't that savvy about the world. And the threat from your coach is probably pretty compelling. Starts with the "All of the other divers have done it. If you don't then you're going to be sitting at the end of bench watching the other girls get more training and attention and achieve their dreams." If she balks, the inevitable "Who are they going to believe? Me, the well-established coach with a spotless record, or you, the new diver who's motivated to slander me because I won't give you special treatment?" comes next.

As far as your normal abuse of power for sexual favors goes, it's a pretty standard playbook...because it works.

Its just plain old rape, doesnt matter the age.

2907.02 Rape.
(A)

(1) No person shall engage in sexual conduct with another who is not the spouse of the offender or who is the spouse of the offender but is living separate and apart from the offender, when any of the following applies:

(a) For the purpose of preventing resistance, the offender substantially impairs the other person's judgment or control by administering any drug, intoxicant, or controlled substance to the other person surreptitiously or by force, threat of force, or deception.

I think it's less "the right to refuse to train" and more the "the coach will stop training me and straight focusing more on someone else that I want to be better than"

I have not idea what this has to do with the story as reported in the link. Did this coach actually Cosby the diver???

She was 16. He asked for nude pictures. Even if they can't prove he asked for them, the fact they found hundreds of explicit photos of her on his phone and he made no effort to stop them or report to authorities means he is going to go down for possession for underage porn. What kind of shitbag let's a 16 yo girl who you are coaching send you hundreds of pics and doesn't stop it?

As far as your normal abuse of power for sexual favors goes, it's a pretty standard playbook...because it works.

As I understand it, the NCAA has no clear rule that absolutely prohibits coaches and players engaging in consensual sexual activity.

I think this is an error of epic proportions on their part due to the obvious balance of power concerns.

But assuming there was no rule in place and assuming the player was at the age of consent I do not see how the lawsuit in question has a leg to stand on. Unless some jury just decides to find guilty on the "ick" factor.

Her unwillingness to press criminal charges after the coach got shit-canned seems problematic.

You're dreaming if you think this highlighted construct alone could be a viable prosecutorial strategy for a rape conviction.
