Agreed. If one can control and dictate the fight, that would bode best for them. This could apply to a counter attacker too, imo because even if the opponent is throwing more strikes is pressing forward, technically a counter striker could be leading that opponent where he wants and setting him up for a vicious counter.

The ratio of failure vs success is too high.

Bad strategy.

Great idea TS and if fighters just kept bouncing up and down alternating high knees with every bounce they'd pre-emptively block every takedown attempt. Brilliant, MMA is about to go through a paradigm shift and you led it.

Timing a counter knee like that is difficult and if you mess it up or your opponent just eats it and keeps coming you are off balance and much easier to get down.

Also while the sprawl is defensive it puts you in a pretty great position, just as is you have submission options like the guillotine, D'Arce choke and anaconda choke, you're positioning is also 180 degrees away from prime rear-naked choke position. Also the positions where you have your opponent on his hands and knees/belly and you're on top of him are pretty safe, generally there is little risk of anything offensive from their end other than pushing through for a TD attempt from sprawl. Other than that mostly we see guys either try to flip over so you are facing each other on the ground or they try to stand up.

It is just a saying... probably applies best to football where keeping your own defense off the field is the better defense.

Doesn't really apply to war/fighting where offense and defense are happening in conjunction. There have been many fights/battles lost because someone got led into a bad situation.

Some wrestlers shoot so fast that there isn't really time to throw the knee
