Likewise, if someone took a step backwards when their opponent rushed in, then circled out and put their opponent at a disadvantageous angle, I'd call that good octagon control too.

But if two guys are simply walking forward and walking backward with no produced results, I can't call that octagon control by either fellow.

Hendo was pushing forward but getting tagged for his troubles; it's hard to say he was 'controlling' Machida's movement at any point, unless Leonard Garcia really did deserve to win over Nam Phan.
Not bad. Hopefully someday someone writes this shit down in judging criteria so we can have consensus and this fuzziness ends.

About this specific fight, I think it was just hard because so little happened. From BOTH guys. I'd honestly have to watch again to even know what to say. He got tagged some and landed some. Mostly though neither did anything.

Both guys just had a huuuuuge amount of respect for the other guy's ability to finish them with one strike. That's what made it tense and exciting for some, and incredibly boring for others. If I'm Hendo, I know I don't have a huge amount of offensive options and Lyoto is really fucking good at demolishing wrestleboxers, so I'm tentative. If I'm Lyoto, I know Hendo knocked out Fedor, so he's capable of knocking out most mammals on the planet. So the two guys were super careful, Dan never wanting to (or being unable to) switch the game plan, and Lyoto throwing a bajillion feints that never yielded the opening he was looking for.

I definetely thing hendo won ! He was pushing the fight the whole time and had octagon control ! If he didnt win 29 - 28 then at least it should have been a draw

people are stupid. hendo couldnt do anything. his only successful offense was falling on top of a tripped machida and like it or not, swinging wildly not hitting anything should not earn you a win.

It was close enough where I wouldn't whine either way. Even the overall fight numbers were somewhat close but Lyoto pulled ahead on significant strikes. I would have goven the fight to Machida.

Yeah I actually felt the same way at the start too. Knowing any mistake could be the end for either guy. I had that same "oh man the tension is great" feeling for Glover/Rampage. I liked that fight more though because the tension broke eventually. The only difference between you and me is I love the tension AT FIRST but NEED the tension to be broken before it ends. Otherwise... when it just "ends" ... then it is anti-climactic. I ask myself "man... so all that tension led to feints and that was it?"

This is coming from a guy that would never get a lap dance though just because I don't believe in doing things half way or appreciate a tease unto itself. So it is all individual I'm sure.
