Rankings are the public opinion's approximation of ability and accomplishments.

If Shane Carwin(or better yet Roy Nelson) went 50-0 even with his limited skillset, then he'd be #1 p4p no questions asked.

Rankings are based on opinion from [Pooled data i.e Results] to determine who is better than who. For the most part they are fairly accurate.

Exactly, skill is relative to the opponent you face. For example, that Jimmy Hettes guy can outgrapple lower level guys on the ground (that taiwanese guy) yet he cannot do that to someone better. On the contrary, the taiwanese guy can probably out grapple someone else, lower lever, just like Jimmy Hettes did him. But it doesn't mean any of them should be ranked based on their performance against a specific opponent.
