Need help with weight/strength training and running.

Hi, first off I train only to better myself as a fighter so I try to keep the training focused around that.

But how much weight training should I do before it crosses the line? I go to the gym regularly 3-4 times a week and work on all areas of the body but don't want to start going over board.

And how many days should I run? I usually go 30 minutes or so and was planning on doing this everyday but thought that again might be overkill?

Thanks.

Do you do heavy lifting or high reps?

How often do you train in MMA?

Is it hard running or jogging?

I'm not getting much info here.

Steal the fighter you wish to emulates methods. Master them as your own. I'm sure you can find an Aldo interview where he discusses S&C

For more tone without the cardio, definitely do HIIT (high intensity interval training). Sprint .25 mile, slow jog to recover .25 mile, repeat.

Personally a blend of sprinting and faster jogging is what I use, and I, like you, just work out for the health benefits.

I usually do 3 sets of 10 reps on a high weight.

When I train MMA it's usually 3-4 times a week.

At the min running is a problem as my cardio is dire. I haven't trained in about a year.

I've read about that training for boxing but not MMA, i'll give it a try though.

It's a bad idea to copy an individualised programme designed for someone with specific strengths, weaknesses, needs, etc and use it for yourself.

OP, in the "off" season, when I don't have a fight lined up I lift about 3 or 4 times a week. Normally, in fight camp I can still comfortably lift pretty heavy about 3 times a week. However, this fight camp I need to focus my efforts on weight loss for a same-day weigh-in, so strength work isn't my priority- I aim for two heavy sessions a week, and one "lighter" session, working on different lifts, and bringing in some power and speed work.

Personally, for best strength gains, I recommend a programme like 5/3/1 for intermediate guys, or Sheiko if you're strong, and have the time and energy for it.

Try HIIT like the guy before - it's more efficient and you'll train power as well as endurance. I'm not sure if it's best to do high reps or low reps for fighting, but a rep scheme of 12,8,5,3,3,1 will train both endurance, power and strength. So for example, Monday could be (12,8,5,3,3,1) on the squat, with supplementary exercises such as box jumps, sled runs etc.

I lift one day a week full body. Run 3 miles in 21 minutes once a week. Start sprinting 4 weeks out from an event and do that two days a week. If you're interested pm me and I'll send you my routine.
