A decision only occurs if the two combatants cant dominate their opponent enough to warrant a ko or submission (or a tko ref stoppage). So a finish of an opponent is the finality, its the actual intended goal of the competition.

Going the distance is not the goal of the competition its a by product of not being able to finish your opponent and him/her not being able to finish you.
Exactly.

If JDS was allowed to beat on Cain's dazed corpse for 24~ more minutes, I wonder if that guy would still want to be Cain. No disrespect to Velasquez.

But as you said, JDS took a beating for 5 rounds because he wasn't in so much danger that the fight needed to be stopped. It's not really fair for that guy to say he'd rather be Cain from the first fight than JDS from the 2nd fight, when Cain from the first fight had to be saved from suffering further damage.

A difference in terms of dominance, or a difference in terms of 'fluke chances?' Those concepts are being used interchangeably in this thread, but I'm not sure they're the same thing.

So many people are speaking of them as if they are the same thing though, that I'm beginning to question if it's my definitions that are off.

In general, no not really.

If after the fight you can definitely say who the better fighter is, based on their performance, then that was a dominant performance.

There should be no need for another fight after a dominant performance to settle any sort of score or debate.

A quick KO doesn't answer many questions as to who is overall better, and who the clear favorite would be in a rematch.

Its nice to see a good KO and props to fighter that have that type of power but I like to see domination, maybe even for five founds.

I want to see fighters being good in striking, wrestling, BJJ, mix it up and show that they have tools because most of them do so when we get fast KO its nice to see it but I feel we are left out to enjoy more in their performance.
