UFC 167 prelims had 998,000 viewers, and UFC 168 prelims did 1.5 million on FS1. That blows both PPV's out of the water. But, you make a good point about multiple people watching, sports bars, etc. I still think slightly more people actually SEE the prelims, but more people end up TALKING about the PPV in the days and weeks afterwards.
Pretty much this. There's no debate that more people probably see the free show and then drop off when it comes time to pay money. When all things are equal, "free TV" will beat out PPV.
Being on PPV though is more of a status symbol thing in some respects. If you're on free TV then you're JUST a fighter. Even if you're the opener on a PPV, it's held in a higher regard in the eyes of the public.
