A lot of the present day rules are stupid, but there's no way elbows are more dangerous than stomping/soccer kicking a downed opponent.

In order to stomp or soccer-kick someone, you have to first drop that someone, something Shogun hasn't done a lot lately anyway.

Elbows do hurt more when they are done properly, they are sharper.
To give a poor analogy, an elbow is like a knife and a knee is like a baseball bat.

Both are dangerous when used properly, but an elbow can end a fight much quicker with a bad gash on someones head.

Personally I'd like to see most techniques available to fighters.

This is martial arts, soccer kicks, foot stomps, knees on the ground, upkicks from any position and elbows should all be allowed.
While unsportsmanlike shots, i.e. groin strikes, eye gouges, head butts, hair pulling and small joint manipulation should still be disallowed.

Mma and boxing is really dangerous as is

The element of stomping on an opponent is not just seriously detrimental to someones well being, its just savage.

Well that would take one of Jon Jones biggest weapons out of his game if they removed elbows. But unfortunately for Shogun this is the UFC and not Pride the rules are specific to the UFC. Another thing I doubt that Nevada State Athletic commission would allow soccer kicks and head stomps? I remember that Dana said he would not mind losing up of rules on knees to grounded fighters but he said the commission would not allow it.

Maybe you should watch basketball or baseball if you find fighting too savage.

PRIDE rules > UFC rules. That is all.

has there ever been reports of people being seriously injured by them? People say they're so dangerous etc, etc, but is there like data behind that?

I mean taking shin to the chin can't be good for your health either

legal soccer kicks and stomps make it closer to a "real street fight", but how many of you have seen someone get stomped and or soccer kicked in the street? I have, and it was the most savage classless brutal thing I've ever witnessed...and I don't think it has any place in the professional sport of mma...if you as a pro fighter cant come up with another way to defeat a downed opponent than stomping them or kicking their head like a soccer ball, too fucking bad, learn some more moves lol, we supposed to feel bad for Shogun and others who could no longer stomp and soccer kick? Please.
