no, everything must be done together.

strike, sweep, submit, return to feet.

it's not one at the cost of the other. it's all in unison.

one often has to make his opponents worry about subs to set up sweeps and scrambles

but yeah, the idea of "holding on for a standup or for the opponent to make a mistake" is conceding the round and likely the fight nowadays. the guy on bottom should not be waiting for more than a couple of seconds at a time. you look at guys with lauded TDD, chuck, gsp, jones, aldo, prime cro cop, bisping, they dont wait for a second before theyre doing everything in their power to get out

Yes, especially in the women's division.

i think most people actually do that - they either try to tie up and cause a stand up, or strike from the bottom / look to sweep - they'll look for a sub when someone is maybe tired or rocked, but subs are hard to find at the top level - hard to think of many times when an elite guy just got subbed by another elite guy when he wasnt rocked or tired - bendo / pettis 2 comes to mind and that was ridiculous, even bendo gave pettis props for the sub

Not enough fighters strike from the bottom and some that do don't couple it with sweep/sub/stand up attempts. Its not mentioned often but Anderson was hurting Chael in that 5th round with some strikes from the bottom and I think it helped him set up that legendary triangle.

Unfortunately many sweeps leave you open for punches, which is why solid half-guard work isn't as prevalent in MMA.

in this day n age its hard to win off your back. if thats your game plan, your game plan is pretty weak. sure if its there go for it, go for the sweep/sub but being able to quickly standup is just as valuable.
