I guess the only way to change that is if they did 2 on 2 and up style matches

From a marketing perspective, it is harder to build and maintain interest in a sport that's individually based than one that's team based. If you build fan interest around teams you don't have to worry about things like career longevity and injuries. The 49ers and the Cowboys will still be competing in the NFL in 50 years whereas GSP and Anderson Silva will be long gone from the UFC. Individual personalities within the team sports are still important, but that is partly mitigated by the numerous other athletes competing simultaneously and the fan interest in the team, regardless of it's members. But the team concept in MMA is lame.

I'm sure a lot of people would be against that sort of idea but it would actually be interesting just to see how it played out. Unfortunately, it could end up being pretty barbaric. It would certainly change the dynamic of what techniques/strategies are used. I don't think the UFC should do it though.

I'm going to repeat what man people have already said.

It's easier to be a fan of team sports because the team doesn't change, even if the members do. As a fan of a fighter, you're limited to that fighter's career. If he fights for 10 years great. If he fights for 3-4 years, less great. Additionally, teams tend to compete more often than individuals. Plus there's more news to follow on a team than on an individual.
