Read through all 8 pages of this thread to see that only a handful of people seem to know about Rolls.
There is no argument, he was ahead of them all. He had an inner drive that I think resulted from the fact that his uncle Helio, who raised him, never really acknowledged him, and his real father, Carlos, had sort of "given" him to his younger brother Helio since Helio and his first wife couldn't have children of their own. Only a year later, however, Helio had a son with his maid, but Rorion could never match Rolls, the son of his older brother. So there is weird psychological issues all around the family.
Then, later in life, Rolls started cross-training Sambo, judo and wrestling, without the approval of Helio. But Rolls became the instructor of all the Gracies and none of them could beat him. He died at his prime, at only 31 years of age, in a hang-gliding accident. Stuff of legends.
Remember what Bruce Lee did in Fist of Fury, entering a japanese Karate school and beating everybody up? Rolls did it for real. Bruce Lee is so often hailed as the first mixed martial artist, but Rolls was his contemporary and probably developed a more effective mixture than Lee ever did...
