I think you need a combination of winning and entertaining. You can't be all Leonard Garcia style just winging wild punches and no one is going to care about you if you're an exciting loser.

The best fighters are guys like Anthony Pettis who has a very exciting style of fighting but he doesn't compromise winning in any way.

Everyone keeps quoting Fitch, Okami, Volkmann.. but the vast majority of fighters that get released by the UFC are let go because of their record... I would think it would be more important for a young fighter to collect wins, rather than to worry if the fans are cheering during the fight...

There is a long list of reasons of why Travis Fulton is not in the UFC... and to be perfectly frank, his record against credible opponents is a lot less remarkable than the 250 wins he managed to collect against largely sub-par competition...

there are not many fighters who are truly great who are not also good finishers though. Maybe they don't have insane power in their hands but they keep trying. GSP fights often go to a decision but they are rarely boring (maybe against guys like Jake Shields!)

The UFC wants excitement for obvious reason.

A fighter is better off with a win streak no matter how safe, as it will get him better sponsors.
