it sets too high of a bar to enter, even if ppvs are great and keep customers coming back, but most 18-25 year old males wont drop 50$ on a ppv if they dont know anything about the sport. maybe if they watch enough ufc on fox/fx shows but those are so spaced out, its hard for people to get hooked. sometimes a big event brings in new fans who stay, like brock or TUF1, but i dont think the format brings enough first timers compared to people who move on or stop wanting to spend money
I agree, if they had more free shows it would help them build their audience with people who aren't already into MMA, who then might get interested enough to buy a PPV.
