to be fair though, Gus wasn't really legit #2 when the fight took place. We're all sold after his performance, but before that a bunch of us were talking about how he was undeserving of a title shot- especially because he dropped out of his previous bout due to injury (cut), only to be rewarded with a title shot.
I personally feel that the UFC needs to start putting more effort into their marketing of fighters.
It's easy to have Brazilian fighters continue to fight in Brazil, and European fighters fight in Europe... but at the end of the day the main money's in the US, and specifically in Nevada.
a lot of casual fans don't know who Jose Aldo is. But they all know who Ronda Rousey is.
Ronda is heavily promoted by FOX themselves. Our Fox Sports Asia channel features so much of Ronda. Don't think I've ever seen Aldo or Barao though.
Gotta start being promoted! That's what you need to do as a PROMOTOR Mr White. PROMOTE.
Here's an idea for starters. Obviously the lighter weights aren't selling too well.
Why not do a TUF season featuring the lighter guys? Hell, throw the 155 pound guys in there. Lets make in winner gets title shot and huge pay-raise.
This way the audience gets to be familiar with these top 155 guys like Melendez, Cowboy, Nate, etc... instead of guys like Cody Bollinger or Shayna Baszler, etc.
Maybe it will be a bit hard to tie up top 155guys for half a year. Why not 145 then?
Edgar VS Penn is perfect. They should have thrown in a bunch of good 145ers to get them promoted. The more camera time the better.
TUF is meant to launch new talent into the UFC. It's worked well over the years for sure.
The problem though with the lighter weight classes is that there are just a dew established stars in the first place.
For instance, I know more about the 8 guys in the TUF house this season at 135, than I do of current 135ers in the UFC. I don't think I could even name 8.
Time to promote!
